Arrived at Fenerbahçe in the winter of 2021, Mesut Ozil, who aspired to end his career in Istanbul, finally terminated his contract by mutual agreement with the club. He joins Basaksehir.
Decidedly complicated end of career for Mesut Özil. After a promising debut at Fenerbahçe, including eight goals and two assists in 22 games this season, the former Arsenal player was dropped from the group, before the arrival as coach of Jorge Jesus did not definitively confirms his fate.

“It has been agreed that the contract between our club and Mesut Ozil will be terminated by mutual agreement”, writes the Turkish club in its press release, indicating that it wishes “success” to Mesut Ozil.

Despite his recent worries, the former Gunner keeps a good popularity rating and will not have taken long to bounce back … in the neighboring club of Istanbul Basaksehir, which formalized his arrival shortly after. Mesut Özil therefore arrives as a free player.

Released by Fenerbahçe two years from the end of his contract, Mesut Özil joins Basaksehir for a year plus another optional.

Fenerbahçe announced on Wednesday the termination “by mutual agreement”, two years from its term, of its contract with the German player.

Arriving in Istanbul in January 2021, Özil was expelled from the Fenerbahçe first team at the end of March after coming into conflict with his management.

2020 champion of Turkey, Basaksehir finished 4th in the Süper Lig last season.

The club is known for its close ties to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who witnessed the 2019 marriage of Mesut Özil to a former Miss Turkey, Amine Gülse.
